Korean Cinema Day in Vancouver

Film Screening & Panel Discussion

Vancouver, BC – The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea will be hosting Korean Cinema Day in VancouverFilm Screening & Panel Discussion on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at UBC Robson Square Theatre. Esteemed panelists include Dr. Mark Harris, Dr. Hyung Gu Lynn, Dr. Don Baker and graduate students in Film Studies at UBC and SFU.

This event aims to celebrate Korean cinema and provide an introduction to prominent themes and issues for those unfamiliar with the dynamic film industry in Korea. The film to be screened is “The King and the Clown,” a historical drama released in South Korea in 2005. The film is set in the 16th century during the reign of King Yeonsan, and focuses on the relationship between the King and one of his clowns while exposing the corruption of his Court.

The panel is composed of experts in Korean cinema, culture and history, who will place the film in historical context and discuss its main themes as a reflection of Korean cinema. In addition to focusing specifically on the film “The King and the Clown,” the panel will address more general themes often present in Korean films. Potential topics include the role of love, jealousy and revenge, portrayals of homosexuality, and family relations in Korean cinema.

This event is open to the public and refreshments and snacks will be served.
